What Advanced AI Means for Businesses
The rest of this site explains AI to children. This page is for the adults who run companies and want the same plain-English clarity about what advanced AI means for business — and what to do about it.
Where we actually are
Today's AI is not superintelligent, and it is not about to run your company. What it is is a set of genuinely new capabilities that were science fiction five years ago: software that can read and write in natural language, understand images and documents, summarise, classify, draft, translate and answer questions about your own data. It is uneven — brilliant at some tasks, unreliable at others — which is exactly why it rewards businesses that pick their use cases carefully.
What it means in practice
- Customer support that answers the routine 70% instantly and hands the rest to a human with a summary already written.
- Document work — contracts, invoices, applications, reports — read, extracted and checked in seconds rather than hours.
- Search that understands questions, across your own knowledge base, policies and product data.
- Drafting emails, proposals, product descriptions and code, with a person reviewing rather than starting from blank.
- New product features that were impossible before: a "just describe what you want" box in your own app.
What to be careful about
The same lessons we teach children apply to companies. AI learns from examples, so it inherits the biases and gaps in your data. It can be confidently wrong, so it needs checking wherever the cost of a mistake is high. And it does exactly what it is told, so the goals you give it matter more than the model you pick. Good AI work is mostly careful design, testing and guardrails — not magic.
How to start
- Pick one process that is repetitive, text-heavy and currently slow.
- Measure how it performs today (time, cost, error rate).
- Build a small version with a human checking every output.
- Expand only where it measurably works.
Most successful AI projects look boring from the outside. That is a good sign.
